Water: The key component of excellent energy levels

Our bodies are made up of 70% water. We need water to survive, yet few of us drink enough of it.

If you are exercising regularly, if you are exercising in heat, humidity or the cold you may need more water than you think you do.

If you also like to drink coffee, tea (as well as energy drinks) and alcohol, you also need to drink water and lots of it.

The amount recommended by the various experts vary greatly, but a good rule of thumb is between 8-10 glasses a day, or 1.5-3L which may seem like a lot.

If you have trouble drinking enough water, try adding natural flavours to make it more interesting:

  • Lemons, limes and orange
  • Mint
  • Herbal tea including green tea

These can all help you to consume more than if it is "plain" water. You may also like to try warm water as opposed to straight from the cold tap. Even in hot weather, I find a warm cup of water easier to swallow than the freezing version.

If you are feeling sluggish especially early in the afternoon try drinking a glass of water it may be the boost your body needs.
