You definitely cannot spot reduce fat

An interesting comment in our forums on shedding belly fat, a reader says she can see the difference in her fingers and outlines of bones in the rib cage area and collar bones, but says the belly fat is not shifting. And what can she do?

First things first:

Belly fat cannot be targeted and spot reduced. The body will decide where to get rid of the fat from and on women the last places are usually belly's and hips.

  • You can do a million sit ups or ab crunches, but if your diet isn't helping - then it's almost a waste of time.
  • Check your portion sizes - make every calorie count in the fat loss / weight loss stakes
  • Drink water and lots of it
  • Avoid alcohol if at all possible, especially beer as it has compounds that promote fat gain and did you know - alcohol is always processed first by the body. You can have a healthy dinner, but if you drink alcohol - even the good stuff will be converted into fat for storage.
  • Remember the exercise / calorie equation. To lose weight you need to expend more calories than you take in.
